Perspective…

I just looked at a series of photographs that a young single adult sent me. It was a series of headshots that I had asked him to take of some other singles. Each shot had parts of the picture in focus and parts that were not. It created a neat effect. They have a real artistic element to them. I was impressed with his creativity.

One thing that I don’t find real artistic is that my own life has so many things out of focus. It does not seem to create a neat effect. In Paul’s letter to the Church in Ephesus, he wrote, “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened [brought into focus] in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.” (Ephesians ww1:17-19)

Paul’s words are encouraging to me. Notice that Paul had to keep on asking God to help that church to know Him better. It is not something that we just figure out and that’s it. It is a life of discovery that a Christian lives. I need the Spirit of wisdom and revelation so that I can know Him better. That is what the discovery is all about. The problem is that I sometimes cannot see straight! Paul prayed that their hearts would be brought into focus so that they could know what their expectations should be, how they fit into the big picture, the rush that comes from being connected to God and the power of God. That is my prayer. I am asking God to lead me to a proper expectation (my hope) in his calling of my life. I am asking God to give me a perspective that allows me to be able to see my life in the backdrop of what he is doing with His Church. I am asking Him to help me to enjoy the journey of which I get to be a part. I am also asking Him to allow me to experience and recognize His great power.

A life lived in focus does not necessarily mean that I have to see everything clearly. It just means that I have a good grasp of the creative journey that I am on. I hope that when others look at my life, they will see God’s great artistry and be impressed with Him.
